Haggs Castle, Glasgow
The Victorians have the reputation for having ‘re-invented’ childhood. Before this children were thought of ratheras small adults and treated accordingly. With the Victorians came a wide range of toys for their newly-discovered children, many examples of which are on display in this exhibition, mainly covering toys from the period 1850—1950.
Included are modern replicas of some examples like a diabolo (cone, stick and string) and a bandalore (original yo-yo) lor children to try out for themselves. The Art Gallery and Museum, Kelvingrove have also lent an interesting and ancient relic from a child’s world, a 2000 year-old Egyptian toy horse. (Sally Kinnes)
