Scottish Opera’s winter pocket of performances opens on Tuesday 27 with a new production, by John Cox, oI Wagner’s Flying Dutchman. Never one to let a good story go by, Wagner bases his powerful drama on the romantic legend ot the Dutchman who is condemned to sail his ship for ever- or until he linds a woman who will be laithtul to him. Easier said than done, especially as he only has one chance every 7 years to land and seek her out. The opera opens as one at the 7 year
stretches comes to an end and he finds just what he needs In Norway, Senta. But even though she tails In love with him and promises to be faithful, the Dutchman is not sure enough to trust her and believes that his lite on the sea can only be lor ever. Senta's love is so strong though that he finally Ilnds release Irom his doomed destiny.
In a strong cast, Norman Bailey sings the title role, with Kathryn Harries (see photo) making a welcome return to Scottish Opera as Senta. Highly acclaimed for her performances in the title role oi Scottish Opera’s world premiere oi Edward Harper’s Hedda Gabler, Miss Harries Is now building up an enviable reputation for her interpretations at 20th Century opera (she recently starred in ENO’s Rape oI Lucretia) and the great Wagnerlan
