The Vaughan Bequest at Turner Watercolours Until Sat 31 Jan. Given the prolific nature ofTurner‘s work. the collection of 38 watercolours from the Vaughan Bequest make a small and useful study of his work over a period of nearly 50 years. I lis interest in massing areas of light and dark is evident from early on. as is his supremely confident handling of pencil. pen and ink. or watercolour. This is the 86th annual showing of the collection: in accordance with the terms ofthe Bequest it is exhibited in. and only in. January of every year when the light is weakest and the risk of fading least. RecentAcquisitions Three works by Francois Boucher. the French Rococo painter have recently been bought by the (iallery. All are pastoral scenes dating from 1761—62. and now hang as a trio. something not necessarily intended when they were painted. as two have been cut down to match the tall narrow dimensions of the third. I. 'Aimub/t' Pastoral. Alexander Carse Thurs 29 Jan—Sun 29 March. Football matches. ale-house punch-ups and wedding dances are amongst the repertoire of this little known artist who delighted in depicting the genre scenes of the late 18th and 19th century Lothians. The exhibition is intended to be the first in series devoted to lesser Scottish artists who deserve to be better known.

The Art at Illustration: Banks Floriiegium Lintil Wed 6 May. Joseph Banks headed a small group of naturalists on board Captain Cook‘s
HMS Endeavour between 1768 and 1771. At every stop on their world trips. plants and flowers were collected and drawn by the young Scottish artist Parkinson. Though the watercolours and sketches were finished by a group ofartists back in England (Parkinson died on the trip home) the 743 copper plates prepared for publication never hit the press. Using original techniques. the British Museum and Alecto Historical Editions are continuing the grand project and a complete edition of the work is underway.

Last year she took up the first post of Artist-in-Residence at Dumfries. set up by Dumfries Arts Centre and the Galloway Association to show the value of the artist in the community. Her work on exhibition is mixed media prints. monotypes. plus charcoal and pastel drawings inspired by the landscape and legend of Galloway. See panel.
