Traverse Edinburgh ‘We’re trying to write about the condition of being lemale and Scottish and living in Thatcher’s Britain.’ Not always a joytul condition, but one that the Ms..Flts, a two—woman group opening up the Traverse’s new venture into cabaret, hope to present with humour—from the vantage point at a Plctish broch. The Plots, an ancient people who vanished with the arrival at the Scots, were unusual in being a matriarchal society: property was passed down through the lemale line. In this show, two Plcts, besieged in a broch, term the linking device for a wide variety ot sketches, raps and songs, perlormed and written by Rona Munro and Fiona Knowles.

theatre thus tar surprisingly easy. ‘I think it has made a dliterence in a way that has benelitted me actually. At the moment It's quite trendy tor theatre to have women writers. But it is limited - it only extends to a certain sort oi theatre and it can also put you in a sort of ghetto, supposed to talk about women's problems.’
The present show deals with anything lrom American toreign policy to the new social security laws, Rona describing it as ‘inlormed by politics’, ratherthan aglt-prop. And ‘overtly lemlnlst’? Rona replies with a characteristic humour and honesty‘. . .I think we’re confused, but trying hard. But then — I think that’s probably the case with most women!’ (S.H.)
