FILM LIST

US, 1985) Alan AIda, Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins. 107 mins. Small town history professor Alda is swallowed by a Hollywood film crew intent on turning his serious study of the American Revolution into a work of ‘popular appeal’. Pleasant comedy-drama that affectionately lamcoons the movie business and updates Alda’s running commentary on the self-deceptive foibles of human relationships. Glasgow; Grosvenor

o Taxi Driver ( 18) (Martin Scorsese,

'Us, 1976) Robert de Niro. Jodie

Foster, Harvey Keitel. 114 mins. An alienated taxi driver in New York is so repelled by the squalor and moral decay around him that he is driven to terrible violence. A searing portrayal ofan inarticulate individual trying to come to terms with and change for the better the running sewer of his experience. Scorsese's brutally realistic drama is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most truthful films ever made in America. Edinburgh; Filmhouse

0 Teen Wolf (PG) (Rod Daniel, US, 1985) Michael]. Fox. 92 mins. Teen idol Fox inherits the family trait of lycanthropy in this wafer thin juvenile caper that barely exploits its central notion. Strathclyde; Odeon Ayr

0 Terms of Endearment ( 15) (James L. Brooks. US. 1983) Shirley MacLaine. Debra Winger. Jack Nicholson. 132 mins. All stops out dramatic weepie with battling mother and daughter MacLaine and Winger reconciled when the former belatedly discovers the joys of a good fuck and the latter contracts cancer.

Hard to resist such a professional

onslaught on the emotions with MacLaine in unbeatable form and Nicholson subversively stealing scenes as the pleasure-giving next-door-neighbour. A good wallow. Glasgow; GET

0 That Obscure Object of Desire ( 18) (Luis Bunuel, France. 1978) Fernando Rey, Carole Bouquet, Angela Molina. 103 mins. Bur'tuel’s last film is a typically idiosyncratic remake of a novel that previously served as the basis for the Von Sternberg/Dietrich The Devil is a Woman. Fernando Rey suffers constantly (if not interminably) at the hands of the temptress who obsesses him. Not one of the director‘s major works, but a few touches amuse; the girl, for example is played by two separate actresses. Glasgow: GFT

'0 Top Gun (15) (Tony Scott, US, 1986) Tom Cruise. Kelly McGilIis, Anthony Edwards. 110 mins. Glossy, mindless mainstream American pap with hunky pilot Cruise proving his worth in the air and on the ground. Nauseatingly patriotic. but some aerial sequences are breathlesst effective. Glasgow; ABC Clarkston Road

0 Under Fire ( 15) (Roger Spottiswoode. US. 1983) Nick Nolte, Joanna Cassiday, Gene Hackman. 127 mins. Nolte‘s war photographer joins journalists Hackman and Cassidy in Nicaragua. His attitude is ‘I don‘t take sides, I take pictures‘, despite his dismay at

the corruption of the American—backed Somoza regime, but his photos eventually play their part in the Sandinistas victory.

Excellent war drama refuses to turn into romantic slush or gung-ho heroics, but concentrates instead on the question ofpersonal commitment and the power of images whilst maintaining a vice-like grip at the same time. Highly recommended. Edinburgh: Filmhouse

O Vloll (15) (Vincent Ward, New Zealand. 1984) Bill Kerr, Fiona Kay. 90 mins. A New Zealand family on an isolated farm have to come to terms with the death of the father whilst struggling to eke a living out of the land and combatting the brutal elements.

Pictorially handsome. episodic rural drama whose catalogue of trial and tribulation never quite attains the epic resonances it seems to yearn for. It remains a debut feature to be applauded for its ambition rather than its accomplishemt. Edinburgh; EUFS o Wages oi Fear (PG) (Henri-Georges Clouzot, France. 1953) Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Peter Van Eyck. 144 mins. In a sleazy South American shanty town four equally sleazy desperadoes agree to drive, for an incredible sum, two truckloads of nitro~glycerine across the mountains.

Bring a sponge to wipe up the sweat: this classic suspense vehicle creates buckets ofthe stuff. A fine sourpuss vision of man‘s greed married to film-making of unbearable tension. Edinburgh; EUFS 0 Who’s That Knocking At My Door? (18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1969) Harvey Keitel. 90mins. Scorsese‘s first feature is the youthful and energetic product of the French nouvelle vague, a bleakly semi-autobiographical study of the contradictions of life in New York‘s Little Italy (later to be developed in the masterly Mean Streets) filmed with a plethora of effects and gimmicks. Undeniably interesting to see the first tentative steps of a future maestro. Edinburgh; Filmhouse o The Wizard 0sz (U) (Victor Fleming, US. 1939) Judy Garland, Ray Bolger. Margaret Hamilton. 101 mins. An unhappy girl from Kansas journeys over the rainbow and follows the yellow brick road to discover that there‘s still no place like home.

Originally planned for Shirley Temple and almost shown shorn of the ‘Rainbow‘ song this remains pure, undiluted magic. One of a kind and a timely reminder of the special talents of the recently departed Bolger. Edinburgh; Filmhouse O Zellg (PG) (Woody Allen, US. 1983) Woody Allen, Mia Farrow. 79 mins. A pseudo-documentary on the exploits of the fictional character Leonard Zelig, chameleon man of the Roaring Twenties, who adapted the physical characteristics of those closest to him in a bid for anonymity. Clever, witty and quite brilliantly made comic masterpiece.

Glasgow; Grosvenor
