City Art Centre, until Sat 20 Dec.

A glowing exhibition for winter! Very Spanish in feeling - paintings panting with movement and gleaming with reds, blues and oranges. In lact,l retained a stronger impression of the colours used than the subjects painted lot Gavin's canvasses consist of multi-coloured tigures and animals (dogs with green and orange heads) combined with bands of background colour. Colour is seen as challenging in the wonderful ‘Red Night' where a human figure reels back from the impact oi the red.

While the solidity ol the textured canvasses is at all times iorcelui, l was glad oi the reliei uttered by the black and white linoptints (Dog II is particularly haunting) and the looser iorms of works done in oil on paper. The latter requre to be looked at more closely than the canvases - less emotionally direct, they are more imaginatively subtle. (Maureen Sangster)
