A Christmas present of an album or cassette is always welcome, so here is a selection from the best Scottish releases olthe year. Ossian’s (see photo) ‘Light On A Distant’ Show is an unsurprising smooth blend of the Celtic sound that has become their own; the Boys OlThe Lough’s two records ‘Welcoming Paddy Home’ and ‘Far From Home’ represent two eras in the band’s history and line-up and reward the listener as do liddlerAly Bain’s ‘Down Home’ albums from the Channel 4 series and with a heap of brilliant tiddlers lrom Shetland to North America. ‘Whistlebinkies 4’ has dramatic llair in the instrumental arrangements and is emphatically Scottish. as Scotland’s premier folk singer. Cassettes just released include one from Christine Kydd and Janet Russell, full at their delicate vocal harmony; one from Rua, a trio with high energy and some good ideas; and Rod Paterson’s long-awaited solo ellort. Rod’s remarkable voice and guitar style take on love songs from Burns to Cole Porter, the bawdy to the wittin romantic, with great assurance, and reedsman Dick Lee in attendance. Two beauties away from the mainstream are the lunky iconoclasm ol the Polkemmet Pipe Band with synthesiser etc and Andy Munro, alias the one man band Mr Boom whose cassette ol kid’s songs at 22.99 is a must for children or all ages.
