John Bellany-A Selection from Two Exhibitions Both were seen in Edinburgh this year during the Festival. The Scottish Arts Council‘s choice show Bellany‘s latest work gentle, sunlit watercolours and drawings inspired by the artist’s second honeymoon in the French fishing village of Le Treport. Etchings from 1966—86 come from the Printmakers’ Workshop exhibition and show Bellany‘s versatility and mastership of line.

‘Dazzle Invites’ Until Sat 6 Dec. The organisers of Dazzle jewellery exhibitions (seen annually at the Assembly Rooms during the Edinburgh Festival) were asked by the City Art Centre to select a group of designers which would show the range ofwork being produced in Britain in the fields ofjewellery, bodywear and small sculptures. Their choice includes 35ft long paper necklaces, amoebic jewellery and decoration for nipples. Though people like Mick Jagger, Annie Lennox and Salmon Rushdie have bought works from the designers on show, there will be the opportunity to purchase pieces for as little as £3.50 (rising into thousands of pounds for some). James Connolly Until Sat 6 Dec. Born in Edinburgh‘s Cowgate in 1868. Connolly was executed 48 years later for his part in the Easter Rising in Dublin. This exhibition documents Connolly's life and his international associations with the socialist and trade union movements.

Hugs from Lauriston Until Sat 6 Dec. An opportunity to see and examine Lauriston Castle‘s fine collection of Caucasian and Turkish rugs in one room. The Edinburgh Scene Until Sat 6 Dec. Artists were invited to submit work which shows the city of Edinburgh today. Awards will be made including a £2000 prize (sponsored by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries) voted by visitors to the exhibition. It will be interesting to see which picture tells the people of Edinburgh the most oftheir own city, for its is depicted here in every hue, from many sides and many moods.

Charles Gavin Until Sat 20 Dec. Originally from Edinburgh, this painter trained in Paris and has since moved to Devon. This will be his first showing in Scotland since the 1972 Edinburgh Festival.

Arne Eckland Thurs 18 Dec—31 Jan. An exhibition by this contemporary Norwegian artist.
