Producer Marilyn lmrie finally persuaded her and her first radio play. Fancy you Minding That is broadcast Sun 30 Nov 2.30pm. It is a very well constructed piece about a grandmother. mother and daughter who relate more to the role than the person in their response to each other. It shows the width ofthe real gap between them in spite oftheir apparent closeness and how each is shaped by her relationship with a man (none of whom appear). In a simple structure it covers a complexity of feeling that is neatly drawn and well-observed.
City Whitelight by John McKenzie is the Monday play during the Scottish week on l Dec.8. 15pm and isa complete re-write of the book. It is a tough political allegory. set in an anarchic and terrorised city and produced by Patrick Rayner who also produced About Last Night. by Robert Forrest. Tues 2 Dec. 3pm. Taking as its subject the nuclear threat and people's response to it. it mirrors a private. personal violence and a wider external one in what might be the very last night ofall.
Colin Douglas. style as ‘Marchmont‘s greatest living writer‘ is the author of The Houseman 's Tale soon to be broadcast as a mini—series on BBC iv. Betterto Breakyour Neck. Thurs 4 Dec. 3pm is his first radio play. a poignant and all to familiar story of a Miss Macinnes. retired schoolmistress and NHS patient. who‘s case develops tragic complications.
()utwith the Scottish Drama Week a number of other productions from the Edinburgh drama studios are currently being networked which show the strength and high quality of their output. It explores the personal and inter-personal moral dilemmas for a married couple who's private and professional life has fused beyond the point where they can extricate their feelings. Bill Paterson and Phyllis Logan make a convincing Scots couple within its recognisably Soviet parameters. Stephen Mulrine. lecturer at Glasgow School of Art. translates and Marilyn lmrie produces.
Bill Paterson also reads Radio 4‘s new Book at Bedtime. The Fall of Kelvin Walker. December 3- 12 and Neveriand by Frances Gray is a deserved joint winner ofthe Radio Times 1985 Drama Award. produced by Marilyn lmrie. Aged thirty eight. unmarried and long-time supporter of a woman‘s right to choose. Lesley suddenly finds she is pregnant. Finally. even a Scottish tribute from Radio 3: Music ior Strite and Sorrow Sun 30 Nov. is the first of three short programmes on battle music and laments from the Scottish gaelic tradition.
