Muirhead Bone was appointed the first ever official British war artist in 1916. while James McBey from Aberdeen made a series of unofficial prints while serving in the forces at the Somme. Frank Brangwyn's work was calculated to stir up war fever. Percy Smith reminds us of the horrors of war and Fred Farrell records the action in France and the factories around the Clyde. Academics and Revolutionaries Until mid-Jan. Fifty-six paintings. prints and drawings from the gallery‘s collection illustrate the conflict between tradition and innovation in the art of the late 19th century. The principles ofthe ‘Old Masters‘ were championed by artists like Ernest Meissonier and Edwin Poynter. who produced a highly finished picture with a story woven through. Among the challengers were the Impressionists. the Glasgow Boys and the Hague School with boldly depicted scenes from everyday life. Glasgow Print Studio, Glasgow There is nothing morbid about Elspeth Lamb’s prints. It is true she pays tribute to the poet Sylvia Plath who committed suicide and she does have an attraction towards tombstones, but these moody subjects are given a royal treatment in ruby, turquoise and gold. Her black is not sinister, but the colour at a deep past. ‘Crossing the Water’, her solo at the ' Glasgow Print Studio is bright with images at time and mortality. Huge hourglasses hold sand enough tor centuries. Like an ocean bed, one contains ancient lossils while another is marked with the contour lines 01 a map, white on black, like an X-ray. Trips to the archaeological sites ol Crete have instilled legend and mythology into other prints. A creature, halt-human, halt-dog holds a golden hand open in reverence like a pagan icon and winged angels spout from the throats oi tishes. A lorelei trom other shores sings in purple and red. In some cases lithography blends with colle chine, a technique which
uses printed Japanese papers in a torn oi over—printed collage. Though a sensitive medium tor her subject matter, some of these prints have lost the strength at others in their complexity. Her best are those with a central, glowing image. (Alice Bain)
