, SCOTLAND VI It remainsa
mystery that Scottish lootball, currently enjoying such a boom at the domestic level cannot assert itsell in the international arena. The coach doesn't have enought time with his players it is true. As is the tact that the sheer number at games expected of modern day players takes its toll. What I cannot accept is the theorylhal there is a lack oi talent about. Miller, Gough, McStay, Nevin. Johnstone and Dalglish ior example would be worth their place in any international side.
Public and media alike have iinally tumbled to the tact that our iront men are not going to score goals it the midiield struggles to get over the hallway line and it is in this area that changes must occur. It is by now obvious to anyone that McStay and Strachan do not play well together, so one at them must go. Which one to select tor the chop is a touchy subject, but I would have Strachan on the bench lorthe start.
There is also good cause tor the reintroduction oi Nicol who is the type at player who loves to get lorward to both create and put away chances. Roxburgh mooted the possibility oi playing two wingers, which would be a welcome innovation Ior at least part oi the match— surely

and Johnstone never had a chance against Eire and deserve another outing and would I am sure, benelit irom the use at wide men.
The most contentious point about this match is not, however, Scotland's iorm — or lack at it— it is the SFA’s ridiculous decision to Iix the admission price at a minimum of £4. It may, as Ernie Walker says, be the lowest in Europe, but it is equally true that it is too much tor Scotland - especially in the light at their most recent Sponsorship deal. I Ior one won’t be paying £4 to stand on a cold terracing, and I suspect I won’t be the only one prelerring a night in lront oi the tire. (GC)
