LE RUE’S BOOTS

‘Roots music' of disparate traditions and cultures is performed in the two cities overthe next fortnight. The virtuoso Guo Brothers (Edinburgh 8 Nov) are from China and trained in the closely aligned Chinese classical and folk idioms. One of the three brothers is the world's leading exponent on the cheng, the precursor of the mouth organ by many centuries. This wondrous bundle of tubes unites with the erhu, a bowed fiddle, and the Chinese flute to produce an amalgam of music from all parts of their country. Andy Irvine (Edinburgh 12 Oct, Glasgow 13 Oct) is a consummate interpreter of Irish folk song and shone for years in the constellation of Planxty. The blues band of the eighties and becoming ever more successful in the charts and at the box office, the Cray sound has moved from that which won a handful of National Blues awards two years ago, now with a line up of keyboard, bass and drums topped with his uncannily eloquent and last guitar work.
