Design tor Savings Until Mon 3 Nov. In an exhibition which marks 125 years of National Savings. posters from 1916 to the present illustrate not only the highs and lows of graphic design as it developed this century. but also seventy years of social history. The art ofpersuasion has come in many guises over the years, from an actual killing in Frank Braugwyn‘s First World War poster. ; ‘Put Strength in the Final Blow‘ l (1916) to the overgrown daffodils in Gered Mankowitz ‘Go for Growth‘ seen advertising National Saving this year. It‘s a fascinating exhibition which pinpoints the everyday in advertising and gives it a place in history.

First World War Artists Sat 8 Nov-20 Jan. From the gallery‘s collection of prints and drawings. Muirhead Bone was appointed the first ever official British war artist in 1916. while James McBey from Aberdeen made a series of unofficial prints while serving in the forces at the Somme. Frank Brangwyn’s work was calculated to stir up war fever, Percy Smith reminds us of the horrors of war and Fred Farrell records the action in France and the factories around the Clyde.

Fifty-six paintings, prints and drawings from the gallery‘s collection illustrate the conflict between tradition and innovation in the art ofthe late 19th century. The principles ofthe ‘Old Masters' were championed by artists like Ernest Meissonier and Edwin
Poynter. who produced a highly
photographs of the Gorbals as it has changed over the years, by well-known local photographer Oscar Mazarolli.

The Robin Philipson exhibition opens in Edinburgh 27 Nov (to 10Jan), coming to Glasgow 17 Jan (to 10 Feb). The Donaldson exhibition opens in Glasgow on 28 Nov (to 10 Jan) and moves to Edinburgh on 17 Jan (to 10 Feb).
