1?: (Sergo Paradjanov, USSR, 1985) 87 mins. It’s taken sixteen years for Sergo Paradjanov to be allowed to direct a follow-up to the extraordinary The Colour of Pomegranates and this is it. The film imagines a mythical Georgia of indeterminate date where the national defences are useless because the walls of the Surnam fortress collapse every time they reach a certain height. It is left to a willing martyr who will allow himself to be bricked into the ramparts before the fortress will stand and the country remain safe.
Like its predecessor this is a visual treat with vast, richly textured tableaux ravishing the eye, but the current film has a more obvious
narrative at its coreAnother hVDnOtiC achievement from one of the

Hoskins on brilliant form as a naive ex-con armed with an anachronistic sense of moral duty and misplaced feelings of tenderness, charging through Soho vice to rescue a damaged damsel in distress. Little does he realise that life, as always, never conforms to his

O Otello (U) fir (Franco Zeffirelli. Italy, 1986) Placido Domingo, Katia Ricciarelli, Justino Diaz. 123 mins. Zeffirelli pulls out all the stops to inject some cinematic vigour into the stuffy climes of filmed opera. The result will probably offend the purists and is unlikely to win hordes of fresh converts.
His version of the Verdi warbler is dished up with over-emphatic brio. lavish locations. unnecessary flashbacks. the exclusion of Desdemona‘s Willow Song and a hint of homoeroticism. ‘Lungs’ Domingo gives his all Glasgow; ABC Sauchiehall Street.
