Cauldron cookery is a largely forgotten art. but cauldrons used to be an important part ofany kitchen. This exhibition shows how lots of familiar household items have changed and there is a special game. Old and New. in which children are invited to match up items illustrated in old photographs with their modern equivalents.
From mid-October some intriguing sculptures and pictures will also be on display. including a large woolly snake and knitted mushrooms!

Heroes and Heroines is the theme for the tenth Children‘s Book Week and a list of books ofScottish interest on this subject is available from the Book Trust (send SAE to the address below). Julia Eccleshare. former children‘s books editor of the TLS and fiction editor for Puffin and Hamish Hamilton has selected 275 books (from some 4.501) published last year) for this exhibition. There is a very useful. well-indexed catalogue which gives a short review ofcvery book. plus some illustrations. She notes in the introduction the lack of new writers and illustrators- fewer authors are writing more books — but there has been some ‘outstanding'
visual material in picture books.
There will be a bookshop open during the exhibtion. plus lots of competitions for children.

Toys bythe British Toymakers’ Guild Until 25 Oct.
Anyone who wants a rocking horse should go along and see the fine examples on display by prizewinning members ofthe British 'l‘oymakers Guild. Most ofthe exhibits are for sale and there is some stylish work from the highly elaborate to some attractive scissor snapping dragons. However. most exhibits look as though they have been designed not so much for the child as the parent!
