Design Centre, Glasgow If you think designer clothes are a rare breed think again. The black cashmere cardl and the luscious pink lambswool suit that greet you as you enter the Design Centre, are both specially created for Marks and Spencers. ‘Spin-Dfis', the new fashion exhibition first seen in London this summer, states loud and clear that good, often excellent textile design can be found in the brightening constellation of department stores and chains. In the beginning there was St. Michael. Now there's Next (for men too), Principles. . .they’re multiplying. And the anthem of both established and new, champions high qualityirom dye to design.
In a country where the weather requires warmth and the hills breed sheep, it is not surprising to find woollen garments predominating.

Downstairs, theiumpers and jerseys of ~5
Pringle, Baliantyne, McGeorge and colleagues dominate the floor. Their style is classic— practicality with a touch of cashmere luxury or cotton coolness. The look is international with single colours predominating. In contrast, the handknits upstairs have a more quirky appearance. The imagination is the limit. Jazzy notes are hit by some of the chains too. Next, already synonymous with the new High Street chic, knits mass-production with good design into faultless combinations.
But wool is only part of the story. Invention is also applauded in the work of Rosemary Moore, whose new stretchy fabric cling wraps the body in a tube of colour. English Eccentrics get a word in widthways with their new ‘dada’ designs and Georgina von Etzdort’s ‘Scarlett D’Hara' dressing gown in velvet silk breathes a little

In the ‘designer' layout, it is a pity some labels are obscured by clothes and some clothes obscured by ugly little electronic security guards the size of small radios.
