The 1986 Mod Mod, that great annual cultural celebration at Gaeldom, is being held in Edinburgh 11-17 Oct. Spread over ten venues, the event this year has attracted 39 choirs, 600 adult competitors, and 500 children. The competitions tor the two gold medals— in male amd iemale solo singing are regarded by many as the important business oi the week, but the Mod is a great social occasion, with impromptu sessions in hotels all over town. A series oi Usher Hall concerts includes concerts by Capercaillie, an Dban based and highly respected young iolk band with a line singer in Karen Mathieson; the Boys at the Lough, with Aly Bain on iiddle, and with more oi an Irish slant than ever; Calum Kennedy, the perennial tartaned showman; Ann Lorne Gillies, whose cleverly arranged records have outsold all other albums oi Gaelic music and Christine Primrose, one at the iinesi traditional

Naiiseanta, the National '

singers (also appearing in Cumbemauld on 14 Oct).

Not to everyone’s taste, but incrediny popular, is the sound oi massed iiddles, and a Fiddlers Rally is being held in the same venue. in complete contrast the French Institute plays host to tour evenings 01 Poetry with readings by, among others, Sorley MacLean and tan Crichton Smith. An exhibition in sound and photographs irom the archives at the School at Scottish Studies is being set up in the Assembly Rooms and the National Library are preparing an exhibition at Gaelic books. Jenners is arranging a display at Mod awards and silverware. There are special religious services beign held and at Waverley Station, Scotrail will ceremoniously name a train ‘An Comunn Gaidheaiach’. The Mod lniormation Shop in Waverley Market is now open ior tickets and lniormation. (Norman Chalmers).
