always welcome to take whatever suits. That is the key to King’s popularity, and It will appeal as have the previous eight novels. So find
slightly out of character. King’s style often lacks polish though it is seldom sloppy or out of control. However, all of these quibbles are meaningless in the light of what he achieves; a horror novel which entertains as well as frightens.
King does not rely on blood and gore for his chills. It’s his use of the conventions of horror fiction that sets him apart. He has a sharp eye for mundane detail, which, compounded with cynicism about American society, adds black horror to ghosts and ghouls. He can even make the contents of the average American fridge take on the sinister qualities ofCount Dracula‘s coffin.
King scares on many levels, the physical horrors of death and mutation achieve little more than disgust (as the spate ofI Spit on Your Grave videos prove). There has to be more, atmosphere, believability, a moral angle and a good plot. King delivers all this and the reader is
yourself a quiet corner now that the nights are getting longer and indulge yourself in some terrifying entertainment. (Tami Cushing-Allan)
