. At a point in history when the young, more than most, are expected to be
i tragic and despairing, it is reireshlng to
see the 369 Gallery’s show oi young artists, ‘New Talent', putting on a very : bright and colourful lace. Gillian Farmer's salt and quizzical nudes are as sweet and enjoyable as a packet at “Love Hearts’ while Lorraine Turley’s darker and richer paintings have an organic quality which gives power and punch to their subjects — The Creation ; being one oi them.
Olivia Irvine, whose work is already in the City’s collection, gives a haunting, vivid dimension to love comic themes with her works, ‘Love oi Insults’ and ‘Envy'. The only

lavishness oi paint which is enthralling.
The Mercury Gallery is also showing work by young artists, this time chosen item the summer degree shows at the colleges in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. These artists have had less experience than those showing at the 369 and it is hard to escape trom the multitude ot names (there are eighteen artists represented) into appreciation ol individual work. Much seemed like excellent draughtsmanship, on the one hand, or ratherwild and over-imaginative extravaganzas on the other but I did like George Wilson’s quixotic collages and was struck by the glossy vastness ol Malcolm Cheape’s ‘Constructlon' — an awe-inspiring study oi ship-building, poignant in view 01 the state ol that industry today.
