Scottish Ballet begin their autumn tour of Giselle south of the border in Bath. arriving north in Aberdeen in Oct ( 14-18) at His Majesty‘s Theatre. After Inverness (22—25 Oct) this. one ofthe greatest romantic ballets, appears in Edinburgh at the Kings (28 Oct—1 Nov) and then Glasgow at the Theatre Royal (4—8 Nov).
In December the Tron in Glasgow
will be repeating their Dance Week of
last year. Mantis come again with their new production ’Faust‘. there will be another chance to see The Kosh who have just appeared at the Edinburgh Festival and Glasgow Arts Centre in their new work "Telling Tales‘. a dramatic piece. moving beautifully into the most private corners ofemotion and with contributions from at least one local group.
There's not a lot of dance in the two cities this autumn. Make sure you make the most ofit. STAR TREK
If we had the weather it might be possible to see London Contemporary Dance Theatre in the open air (though surely anything's possible after the Toho Company triumph oi Medea under the stars at this year’s Edinburgh Festival. Rain and even hurricane was no deterrent). In Italy, where the company have been on tour recently, it seems not uncommon to dance amongst the architecture (the magnificent 12th century cathedral in Casserta square was one such backdrop) with the sky as cover.
But it’s down to earth and back to the King’s in Edinburgh torthe opening night at their autumn tour (see listings lor dates). Well, not quite down to earth. One at the pieces ‘Unlolding Field’ promises to transport us to the stars, with a glimpse, so rare, oi Halley’s Comet. Christopher Bannerman, choreographer and dancer E with the company for over ten years has 1 based this trio oi dances on a potted 5 history at the comet. The iirst describes ‘ a stone age visitation when all things astronomical proioundly aliecied the lives at the people below. By the time the comet comes round again in the next dance, Halley is alive to name it and the age oi reason has dispensed with any superstitious associations. Number three gives the weary space
traveller back some oi its lost mystery as Einstein’s particles whizz round in a jolly, crazy atom dance. It’s a big, brainy subject to tackle in movement, and could have a limitless number at spin-oils. Will Bannerman’s

was a disappointing recent visit from the famous trail-blazer? Watch out for the live jazz band ‘Man Jumping’ appearing in one section. They have been playing the pubs in London and are just now beginning to become known. (Alice Bain)
