Eamonn McCabe is a winner. Observer photo-ioumallst for eight years, he has been Sports Photographer ot the Year tourtimes. About 30 photographs covering sport from ballooning to basketball will be on display at the Glasgow Arts Centre lrom 8 Sept. Dealing with action daily, it is surprising how still many at McCabe’s images are. Split-seconds are crucial and the result at capturing them with clarity, lreezes an unreal moment.
Balls-table tennis, basket, rugby and toot—are halted in their aerial progress when the shutter comes down, and even the muscles 01 Daley Thomson, champion again, putt motionlessly. Without the clutter ol print and chatter 01 journalists on the page, some of the excitement has been removed. Just some. The humour and glamour and, in one image 01 the Heysel Stadium, the anguish of sport remain. (Alice Bain)
