FRlDAY 22 Edinburgh

0 The Hank Wanglord Band Coasters, West Tollcross. 7pm. £4 (£3 UB40 tickets only available from Ripping Records). far, is there? Never mind, when the wit that crushed a thousand pop stars’ egos is here. Brilliant boogie-woogie ivory tinkler, accompanied by ex-Squeeze drummer Gilson Lavis, and probably in fine form between songs as well, Jools has to be seen some night during his run.

o The Studio Guests/Splash Me I'm Drowning Midas, St Vincent Street. 10pm. Free. Splash Me I’m Drowning are not a zany, blue-anoraked Velvets/Buzzcocks imitation as their name suggests. They’re funk-tinged pop, all the way from Edinburgh. The Studio Guests are Glasgow-based, and they play funk-tinged pop as well.

0 3 Mustaphas 3 Warehouse, Kirkgate. Get Balkanized! The befezzed Mustaphas spin their own brand of East European folk song and cabaret. 1 can see the joke wearing a bit thin towards the end, though.

SATURDAY 23 Edinburgh

0 The Grows (To be confirmed), Warehouse, Kirkgate. One ofthe better local bands and serious contenders for the big time, The Crows have echoes of The Psychedelic Furs and The Stooges in places. Fine debut single still around.

Edinburgh

0 John Martyn Queen’s Hall, Clerk

Street. 10.30pm. £5. Return of Scotland’s folk legend, these days more into a very laid-back MOR. Still one of the country’s finest, subtlest guitarists, he’s reunited tonight with Danny Thomson and Arran Ahmun on percussion and drums in a mainly acoustic set. Also Mon 25 Aug with his full band.

0 Dwight Yoakam Murrayfield Ice Rink. No time or price yet available for this, an appearance by the new gritty country guitarist and singer that Andy Kershaw’s been playing to death on his prog for months. Unusual venue, extraordinary guy. 0 Peristalsis Brothers Platform One, Caledonian Hotel, Lothian Road. 8.30pm. £1. Scotland’s own up-and-coming jump-jive stars. They played The Tube’s Absolute Beginners special a while back.

0 Jools Holland Assembly Rooms, George Street. 11.45pm. £4.25 (£3.50). See Fri 22.

o Tam White and The Dexters Preservation Hall, Victoria Street. 9pm. Free. Raunchy rhythm ’n’ blues with brass. 10-piece band with a lot oftheir own material. Concluding, for the moment, the Jailhouse’s big splurge on this slick HM band, tonight’s a live recording on video too. ' 0 Joolz Assembly Rooms, George Street. 10pm. £4 (£3). Described, hideously, as a ‘post-Cooper Clarke 805 New Wave poet’, and has been gradually working into the public eye, mainly as a support act to bands like New Model Army. Her run at the Fringe coincides with the publication of her first book of poetry, Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know.

Glasgow

0 Special Import The Rock Garden, Queen Street. 9.30pm. Free. Special Import at the Rock Garden is, in fact a live band, not a trendy lager promotion night.

0 Scheme Rooftops, Sauchiehall Street. 10pm. £2. Prior to recording their debut album in The Power Station studio in New York, Scheme have managed to fit in a few Glasgow dates great news for music lovers. 0 The Primevals, James King and Fun Patrol, Kick Reaction, Francis Anthony And The Underworld, The Believers The Mayfair, Sauchiehall Street. 9pm. £3. All proceeds to Scottish Medical Aid for Nicaragua. Musical highlight ofthe fortnight, without a doubt. At time of publication, there was no information available on either The Believers or Francis Anthony And The Underworld. Kick Reaction are a fine, if quirky, pop band, who released a strong debut single ‘Stopping to Speak’ at the start ofthe year. Since then, they’ve kept a very low profile welcome back. As everybody should know, James King is a legend about the bars of Glasgow, and his latest incarnation, the Fun Patrol, are worthy of note. Headline act The Primevals are good-time, slide guitar Rock ’n‘ Roll.
