On Thursday 8 August Bruce Maclean performed at the Fruitmarket Gallery. It was a one-oil. In typical Maclean style,
not short on Glasgow humour, he dodged amongst grey boards to scratchy Cuban music. Slides clicked on and oil, changing shapes and shadows overthe set and the ' perlormer. Maclean was deadpan throughout, but with the touch of Chic Murray which always makes you chuckle.
llyou missed the live performance, you still have the opportunity to see recordings ol Maclean in action at the Scottish Gallery, in an exhibition of prints, drawings, paintings and ceramics. Maclean is not a one medium man.
Large plates with lines of profile, hand or lemale body scratched into high energy painting, greet you at the entrance. There are tall, llat-sided jugs too, one waist-high. Above them the exhibition ol paintings begins, to be continued in the main room and upstairs.
The large canvases are splashy, Maclean's single line ligures just removing them lrom abstraction. Colours are more sombre than the vivacious prints and works on paper and Maclean curiously uses gold and silver, erupting and dripping
