Mary Armour must be weary ot hearing herselt called the doyenne of Scottish
women artists, but there's good reason tor the title. By 1920 she was already a

student at Glasgow School at Art and now, at 85, she is still hard at work in her Kilbarchan studio. 80 a retrospective exhibition is certainly
overdue. In the event the Fine Art Society has done her proud with two lloors at its Glasgow gallery given over to a large selection at her llower paintings, still-lites and landscapes, done over the past titty years. The earliest items, in portraiture, are lranltly pedestrian and it is clear that Mrs Armour quite rightly decided that her talent lay elsewhere. It is as a painter ot flowers that she is best known, at course, but connoisseurs oi landscape painting will recognise here a genuine response to the Scottish scene - lnlluenced at times by Gillies, but none the worse tor that. But the flowers predominate - big, lull-blown , baroque compositions at one end otthe scale and surprisingly delicate evocations at the other. Best, tor me, is the canvas on which two cyclamen tlowers in a green glass dish glow and glimmer in a dusky, indirect light. (Cordelia Oliver) 1
