The inclusion of the word
‘Impressionist’ in the subtitle of the National Gallery’s Festival exhibition (Edinburgh) seems calculated to entice. Impressionist paintings, far from disappearing into the corridors of art history, are very much public property today, the favourite of many. Gallery visitors home in on collections of Impressionism like bees to honey. Their images of land and seascape are reproduced in every conceivable form across the world. A vivid use of colour and the search for light in even the darkest shadow, recreates the breath of nature, from summer meadows to snowy streets. It is an ‘intoxicating’ vision.
But don’t expect pink hapstacks and blue mountains row on row this time. ‘Lighting Up the Landscape’ (until 19 Oct) looks at the run up to Impressionism. through works from the establishment Salons (the major Parisian exhibitions of the 18th and 19th centuries) and the group known as the School of Barbizon (Barbizon being a village in the Forest of Fontainebleu south-east of Paris, where artists including Coral and Millet lived and worked as a community). The fully- fledged Impressionist paintings are saved tantalisingly as a finale to the exhibition, when Cezanne, Pissarro, Monet and Renoir are represented by a dozen or so paintings. Undoubtedly, they will be considered the stars of the show.

brighter. They do indeed ‘light up’. And as the light floods in, execution becomes less formal, more open", having looked at the exhibition close to, you take a walk along the corridor of the New Wing from which you can view the whole exhibition at a slight distance, the move from dark to light becomes quite striking. It is a rare and satisfying opportunity to flick through the pages of art history at a glance and see the prelude to this famous movement in sharp focus.
