Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh

The second play in the Lyceum‘s summer season, A Midsummer Night‘s Dream is a disappointment. Their lirst production, a very enjoyable Pygmalion, continues in repertoire but lan Wooldridge’s Dream is weak and lacks pace. Puck, the impish and merry wanderer ot the night, has been slowed right down almost to a standstill, but it's an empty gesture that doesn’t add anything to the play. There are some nice individual touches and attention to detail by the cast (Penny Bunton as Hermia is able to introduce a rare note ot sexual tension as she tells her would-be loverto ‘lie further 011') but the direction is too ponderous to be magical, and the lairiestoo dreary. They don’t even seem able to believe in themselves. (Sally Kinnes)
