Corrie shows Bums as a spokesman for his people. taking on the repressive hypocrisy of the Kirk, and though it lacks detail and substance, it‘s a welcome antidote to kilt 'n‘ kitsch cliche’s about Burns — a fact that Hayman‘s production celebrates. with warm, exuberant performances from the cast.

which covers Jimmy Boyle's years in Barlinnie Special Unit, and directed the 1 original production at Edinburgh’s Lyceum Theatre last year. This version will be on a much smaller scale
(playing at the Third Eye, Glasgow and Mandela Theatre, Gateway Exchange, Edinburgh in July), but this doesn't
worry Arnold — quite the reverse in fact.
‘We’re keen to do it because we first conceived it as a studio play, as a play thatwould be fairly intimate and intense and when we did it at the Lyceum we had to scale it up. Now we can get back to the intensitythat is always difficult to convey on the big stage.‘
Following up a large main-stage production must nonetheless be daunting forthe small cast- not least for Graham Tent, for whom the central role of Jimmy himself is only his second stage part (his first was a remarkably strong performance in Barry Keete’s ‘Gotcha’ at the opening of the Mandela). Andy Arnold welcomes the chance, however, to try it with a new cast, ‘We can improve on the script after seeing it on the stage. And a lot of problems have been worked out in advance by the first cast, so all the homework has been done in a sense. Doing it for a second time, a new cast come into it fresh, which is very refreshing for us. It's a luxury really to be able to develop on it and expand.’ (Sarah Hemminol
