Emma Goldman, a committed anarchist and teminist was once described as: ‘an unmovable visionary, but one whose tongue and passions no one could tame’ and the United Artists production goes along way in conveying the spirit of this remarkable woman who was eventually deported to Russia from the States. The two person cast at Vari Sylvester as Emma and Hugh Loughlan pertorm admirably on a simple set with only two desks and a backdrop bedecked with anarchist/communist symbols which serves as everything from a newspaper ottice to a street cate as well as any number at Goldman's homes over her liletime.
Sylvester gives a line pertormance as Goldman which is in turns powertul, persuasive. Iunny and sad and Loughlan changes character from 5 Supreme Court judge to lather to lover ; without apparent chart. In the course at the play we are taken from Goldman’s beginnings as a Lithuanian Jew through the important and dramatic . phases at her lite ranging from St.

Indeed, it the play has a fault it is that it iumps back and torward in time and place to an extent that the audience is not entirely sure where or when it is, although the background music sets the scene simply and well.
All in all, this new play by George Gunn is a challenging and ditterent follow up to United Artists’ successlul ‘The Boxer: Benny Lynch' and deserves to be seen by more than the somewhat disappointing audiences it attracted in Glasgow. On at Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh until Sat 3|. (Graham Caldwell)
