: Gallery directorCyril Gerberhas chosen a title torhis Maytest exhibition . and then invited a variety ol artists to

submit work based on the theme. This

yearit is ‘The Barras’.

Forthe viewer, a thematic exhibition provides a convenient opportunity to compare approach and technique. For the artist, however, it can sometimes mean working to a brief quite ditlerent trom personal concerns and therefore yielding mediocre work. Luckily, most participants in this varied exhibition overcame such obstacles and make the show well worth a visit. Special mention must goto Helen Wilson, Carol Rhodes, Douglas Thomson and

' Keith McIntyre. PeterThomson, a ' young artist who deserves more

attention, exhibits a disquieting

' imagination in his painting The

rather bland work entitled Salesman
