audience are at a show trial in more than one sense-Peter Ling’s set tor Peter Amott's new play is a huge courtroom that puts the spectators at
one stage In the jury, at another in the deck, as they watch. It's apt. Amott's play shows us Thomas Muir, leader oi the reform movement in Scotland in the 5 1790s, being framed, charged with sedition and deported by authorities shaken by events in France, though his guiding belief was in Law and peaceful, constitutional relonn.
Amott parallels events leading up to Muir’s trial with events on the transportation ship, where the larger political drama in which Muir is caught is portrayed in miniature. So he
juxtaposes the paths oi revolution and reiorrnation and places Muir's beliets
