The Gateway Exchange— run by Jimmy Boyle and his wife Sarah to help deprived youngsters, the unemployed, ex-oiienders and those with drug problems- is just about to open its latest venture; the Mandela Theatre.

1 The theatre, it is hoped, will provide a steady income and make the Gateway self-sufficient, a desire for independence that spurred the project on without a single penny of public funds. All work, from the fire escape to the seating, scavenged from other theatres in the city, was done voluntarily by users and helpers of the Gateway. The intention is to have a

? fully-functional theatre to provide a

venue iortouring companies all year

round, one that will compete with corresponding theatres in the city

1 centre. It is hoped that prices will be

kept low, but the Mandela insists that

standards of shows will be high. Plays

have been put on at the Gateway since itwas first opened, and its potential as a venue was noticed early. Having seen the theatre and spoken to those who

i have seen previous performances in

i the Exchange, I can report that the

[ venue has an intimacy that guarantees I

a great involvement with the performers.

The first company to appear at the Mandela proper are the Catalyst Company (see photo and dance listings) who will be performing a dance and drama piece, ‘Kuoga’, between May 14 and 17, and no less than ten companies are lined up forthe Festival.

And why the name Mandela instead I of a more British or Scottish bias?

1 Those involved put forward several [ names, but this was the only one that ; everyone felt in tune with, feeling that

the struggle of Nelson and Winnie Mandela in South Africa is identical in

spirit to the struggle against repressive

establishments and institutions that

the Gateway symbolises for those that

need it, that of seeking a positive way

forward through creativity. Incidentally, such is their reluctance

that the Gateway is instituting its own

§ artistic awards—the Mandela Awards - 3 made in a foundry they restored
