Napoli is set from the beginning to have a happy ending. The street crowds in the Italian lishlng village where the story begins, bustles in testive mood while the heroine good-naturedly rejects local suitors. Her heart is reserved tor Gennaro, the handsome sea-captain.
Classically balanced, this ballet by Bournonville, first pertormed in Copenhagen ln1842, moves lrom laughter to storm, trom storm to disaster and trom disasterto laughter once again. Only in your imagination, can you picture how the audience must have marvelled at the dramatic lighting which we now tend to take tor granted, though a sleight at hand bythe green-clad sea sprite Golto transtorming the heroine into a sea maiden in the second act, is remarkably undetectable.
Christopher Long makes a handsome hero joined by Christine Camillo dancing neatly. The cast changes nightly and will include a performance by Elaine MacDonald. Scottish Ballet’s rendering of the rarely perlormed ballet is light and enthusiastic. though the simple story does not give much opportunity to plumb any emotional depths. A cream cake at an evening.
