NEW DIRECTIONS
Mayiest is moving with dance this year. Community participation seems to be a ; high priority with events reaching out to I areas like Penilee and Maryhill (see Listings). The small-scale companies involved, Rotating Dancers, Axis and Fidgit to name three, all have a lotto otter.
Three other companies have been given top billing in the main Mayfest , programme. Japan and Canada are 1 represented but the third is f Scottish-based and new to boot. Peter 3 Royston (above) ex-dancer and choreographer with Scottish Ballet put 3 together a periormance attire Tron last year as a ilyerto iorming a company.
Christened unassumingiy Scottish 5 Dance Theatre, the group are poised to E
bring something new to dance in this i
7 country. Their work will, as the name suggests, have a theatrical ilavour.
Peter hopes that it will have similar appeal to that ol the Citizen’s, though he talks equally at being related (it would be difficult to be close) to the work ol Pina Bausch, the avant garde choreographer. Working closely with
artist Graham Bowers whose skills range lrom rock stage set design to steel sculpture and musician and composerWilllam Henshall, Peter hopes to integrate his choreography closely with other art forms. His
themes though will be at the everyday variety, in an attempt to bring the experience at the audience closer to what ls happening on stage. (Alice Bain)
