RESTAURANTS _

OANVASSING TASTE

Adam Zyw gives his views on Gallery Grub.

In Glasgow, playing a crucial role in

probably Scotland‘s most prestigious modern building, visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, is a very poor restaurant. This is an extraordinary circumstance; in The Burrell Restaurant, surrounded by the sumptuous evidence of the history of world culture, including table ware

and eating and drinking vessels from

many nations’ palaces, second rate fare is served in a first rate setting.

That fails to make good business

5 sense, and the hard-nosed Sir

: William would not be pleased.

. Moreover, this does not match the

j spirit ofthe building, its contents,

3 nor the aspirations of its visitors.

2 They, after all, have come to see The

Burrell Collection because of its excellence. Artistic endeavour

I should not end where the culinary ; exhibits begin.

In the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, in Belford Road, Edinburgh. meanwhile, is housed a magnificent collection of 20th Century art. In the Gallery Cafe,

3 soon, I hear, to be extended into the ' open air, culinary art reigns. The

visitor, sizzling with the visual stimulation he has received above, may stimulate the baser man below. There is an imaginative emphasis on

: home-baking and soup-making, and 2 prices, while not quite at garret level, § are moderate. The formula is right,

: and worthy of adoption elsewhere.

Back in Glasgow, may I pass

briefly over The Third Eye Centre,

COMPETITION REPORT

Sauchiehall Street. which offers simple food with an unambiguous leaning toward the vegetarian. The prices are high for the quantity of low-cost wholesome ‘fuIl-of-beans’ served here but the surroundings are

pitched right for the eating section of

a busy, active contemporary arts centre.

At the Royal Scottish Museum, Chambers Street, Edinburgh. the

canteen is also full of beans and so, if

I may say so, seem most of the happy customers. The egg and cress fingers make a distinctly refined accompaniment to beans and mash, and pie and gravy and beans, and other excellent computations. To date. I class this as the cheapest edible meal in Edinburgh. Keep it up. RSM!
