Intimate objects by Anne Redpath in the collection ol the Gallery oi Modern Art. The exhibition at her watercolours (Mercury Gallery, Edinburgh) is Anne Bedpath outside ratherthan inside. Pictures at iarms, cottages and small towns are in the majority. But the domesticity and aliection ior those subjects, as lorthe slippers, remains along with the tweedy colour other later work.
Born into a Borders iamily, daughter oi a tweed designer, Redpath was a student at Edinburgh College olArt. She excelled and received a travel scholarship in 1919. Europe and its art inspired her. Marriage to an architect assigned to the War Graves Commission kept her in France and she did not return to Scotland until 1934. Much oi the work in this exhibition

appears to have been done during this penod.
Earthy, rustic browns and orange shade the scenes oi the North at France. Her work lrom the South of France strikes a dillerent light. Pastel blues and mauves paint the sunlit walls at the uneven tour and live storied buildings in a chalky wash. Shutters keep out strong sunlight and beached boats dry upturned. Liie is simple in these paintings. Livings are made by lishing, larming and though people are not to be seen, they are taking their siesta indoors or just out oi the picture. Her places are not deserted, just quiet.
It is light oi a different kind again which lills the picture oi a lishing village closer to home. Those pinks and purples oi the Mediterranean, sottened by the sun, sharpen in the water at Pittenweem harbour (above). (Alice Bain)
