grounds is anathema. Successive productions recently have unleashed vocilerous accusations ol maverick direction and design shattering the composer's work.
Antagonism may relent with John Cox's revival ol Mozart‘s The Marriage 01 Figaro. Set and costumes are by the artist and writer John Byrne, whose meticulous and painterly sense ol colour and texture make him one at Britian’s most interesting stage designers.
Figaro is the second opera he hs I designed -the ilrst being Gounod’s La : Colombe at Buxton (1983) — and will be set in 1786, the year of its completion. According to Byrne, the Count's house might then be 200 years old and lashions ol the period rather than of the ‘ year. “What I’m aiming lor is the right feel, a sense at character ratherthan the rigid text-book authenticity.’ (Peter Whitebrook)
