Easterhouse - A Scheme lor the Future Until 30 June. Unemployment, poverty and urban deprivation have all been used in descriptions of this Glasgow post-war housing scheme. Built to house 50,000 people, none of the usual community facilities were incorporated into the initial designs. But despite its severe problems, the community itself has produced poets, playwrights, artists, the Easterhouse Festival Society and a fine community newpaper. Rosemary Beaton, 22, a graduate student at the Glasgow School at Art, hardly iits the popular image oi the angst-ridden artist. She seems to paint almost eliortlessly and last year her very ilrst portrait won the prestigious £60m John Player Portrait Award. ‘it was a bit at a last minute rush, but one at my tutors lent me a irame and I decided to enter it,’ she says oi the study at her fiancee.
As well as the competition prize money, Rosemary recieved a £1500 commission to paint Sir Robin Day lor the National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. To ‘get to know his lace a wee bit better,’ she spent several hours in the BBC studios making preliminary sketches at him in action during both ‘The World at One’ and ‘Duestion Time’. The actual portrait was painted over a two week period last summer at Sir Robin’s London home. ‘He used to play the Andrew Sisters to keep us both awake,’ she recalls and adds, ‘it was quite a challenge because his expression kept changing between serious and iokey and he was always asking questions —I don’t think it’s a caricature though or a cold portrait at a public iigure.’
Despite her evident flair for capturing personality, there are no portraits in Rosemary’s current exhibition at Corners Gallery. ‘Wlth portraits you have to please so many people but this workl can do just tor myseli,’ she says, pointing at a series 01 paintings oi brightly coloured nudes wearing crowns. The regal headgear and recurrent images at castles, lakes, peacocks and chessboard patterned lloors seem vaguely reminiscent oi the
