Citizens’,Glasgow The play takes place within a ‘genteel’ lounge of the sixties, as nicely balanced above a heap of rubbish sprawling at the foot of the stage as the characters are above the rottenness of theirlives.
The visual and verbal cliches, which include flying ducks on the wall, create a world with no connection with any
recognisable moraicode.Pushedto its '-
extreme, the imprisoning cl inch of a cliche becomes a half-nelson grip, squeezing out feeling and literally killing Kemp.
Black and white become so polarised in this black comedy, that the albino characters are no longer aware that there is a pale to go beyond. The lustreiess lust that circles round an uneternal triangle neither wins nor breaks the characters‘ faintly seen
hearts and a strong cast directed by Giles Havergal effect a fine balance with Orton’s deceptively simple script which always leads back to the surface.
