The opening oi Edinburgh‘s new venue, The Empire on Nicolson Street, is an event signiticantenough in itseli in this music-starved town. That it is being opened with an act as prestigious as Steel Pulse, along with Aswad and Linton Kwesi Johnson, the most celebrated purveyors oi British reggae, should make it avery special night. The Scottish leg oi their current tour, promoting the new Babylon The Bandit LPtakesthem to Glasgow Queen Margaret Union on 22 February and the aiorementioned Edinburgh Empire the next night.
From their iormation in the early 705 in Birmingham playing covers by The Wailers and the Isley Brothersto their status as a world-class act now has been a long road. It was the uneasy

alliance between punks and Rastas that set them on it in earnest, as they combined quality music with a sharp sense oi showmanship to attract audiencesthat had until then been unimpressed by these strange Airican rhythms. (Typical oi theirtheatricality are the notorious Klu Klux Klan masks they have been known to don on stage).
Theirlirst LP (so prophetic now in the wake of the recent riots there), Handsworth Revolution, established them as one at Bob Marley's iavourlte acts, and at the Sunsplash Festival held in the man‘s memory, Steel Pulse won over countless Jamaicans, greatly impressed that an English group could have so great a command oi their music.
