Much of Marie’s strange life seems to have been partly attributable to her upbringing —and it is appropriate that the play should be coming to Edinburgh. since itwas here that she spent herschooldays. Her mother. an equally formidable woman. was the first woman to attend Edinburgh University.
‘She was a very bright lady and much in favour of women‘s rights—she was involved in the Society for Women's Rational Dress (hoping to free women from corsets). She had a big effect on Marie: she considered her stupid and believed that children should not be given any affection so that they would become self-sufficient. Marie was brought up to feel unlovable and spent the whole of her life trying to be loved.‘
To Marie With Love is the first one~woman playthat Pauline Devaney has done —though she has been acting and writing for many years (she wrote the TV series All Gas And Gaitersl —— and she doesn‘t envisage herself doing another one in a hurry: its really petrifying doing a one—woman show! still always hope about ten minutes before a performance that the theatre will burn downl'
