John Duncan's symbolism is one oi simplicity and purity. His heroes are golden gods and his heroines, pale beauties. Their eyes glaze atthe sight oi the mortal world and are untainted by ripe knowledge. Their world is one oi endless seas, ilowering bowers and roads with no name. They unite in the
bond oi eternal love or scourge the land
in chivalrous cause. They are mystical Greeks, saintly Christians and Celtic heroes. They belong to another time. The exhibition atthe City Arts Centre, Edinburgh, this month assess the work oi the man regarded by some as a ‘mystic'.
John Duncan began his career as an artist illustrating tor the social political comic paper ‘The Wizard oi the North’ and the ‘Advertiser’ in his home town,
CELTIC MISSED
Dundee. He travelled to italy, Germany and Holland and was associate proiessor at the University oi Chicago iortwo years. Finally settling in Edinburgh, he was known ior hosting gatherings oi intellectuals and artists at his studios in Torphichan Street and St Bernard’s crescent. Deeply involved with the current Celtic Revival, Duncan was a protégé oi Patrick Geddes, philosopher and sociologist. Throughout his liie, as is evident in his work, he remained committed to a personal idealism which was rooted in the past.
in a cynical world, this stringent
' adherence to idealism and purity
verges on the naive. Too many rosy cheeks and cherubic glances iill the canvases. in his tempera paintings echoes oi the Italian Renaissance blend with Celtic knots and art nouveau roses. Some are weakly composed and almost toy in attitude, but the best, like ‘Tristam and lsoide’ and ‘St Bride', are glorious in their design and regal colour.
Although Duncan adored a colourful palette, some at the most poweriul works in the exhibition are monotone. The head oi Cuchulainn, the great Irish hero with curling mane and buckled plaid has a haunting beauty in its controlled design. (Alice Bain)
