Helen has resented her abandonment oi England, stale marriage and role as a dutilul memsahib, whilst Buxmani is alienated by lite in England and longs to return home. Both, in theirway, are victims at the bonds ol marriage and the servile role designated to women oi thelrgeneration.
This delicate siory personalises much greater issues but remains allectlng on a human level. Jatirey and Kerr are both wonderiul, the iorrner lull oi benign good grace and perseverance, the latter deltly blending the tetchiness and reserve oi an older Brit with the yeamlng at a lonely woman tor a sympathetic ear.
