If I say that Champion Doug Veitch is a sort of “Scottish, country and western, cajun dub reggae‘ sort of artist, most people will undoubtedly say ‘What?’ Sadder still, a greater percentage of the population will say ‘Who?’ at very mention of the name. which is something that Champion Doug wants to start putting right at his first ever Scottish gig at Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms on February 15.
His particularbrand of
music is odd in the extreme, blending a
j strong Scottish accent which is music to my ears with a sweet blend of
country caiun pinned down with traditional reggae into a subtle, humorous and soothing groove. His partner/producer in this delicious exercise is dub reggae ace the Mad Professor, without whom, Veitch wouldn't have discovered the original reggae tracks he used in two excellent singles ‘Not the Heart‘ and ‘Jumping into Love‘.
Veitch‘s main loves are making records, which he does every time he has enough money and African music. Doug says that the reasonslornot
I having played Scotland before are mainly because of the size of the band, an eleven piece affair complete with perucssion, steel guitar 3 and fiddle. Mostodd, but not as odd as
the fact that the Champ still manages to
fit in a day job amongst all this activity — cleaning windows. When asked what
' his favourite wish would be he said,

. African music can sell 100,000 copies
in France and only live thousand in
5 Britain, but I can only hope that if we

the Hoochie Coochle Club, previewing

forthcoming record. The standout
track is Stomp, Stomp, a glam anthem
