MUSIC TO REMEMBER
Gold watches, sllvertankards, even a bouquet oi ilowers, are all lairly staple tare as retirement gilts. But it is a rare event ior many years oi valuable service to be honoured by a concert with a new piece written specially lor the occasion. Yet that is how James Milne (see photo), a much respected iigure throughout Scotland, is being recognised as he retires irom the post oi General Secretary oi the STUC.
The 8N0, under the baton ol their Honorary President Sir Alexander Gibson, will give the iirst periormance oi the new work, entitled Sunset Song, commissioned by the STUC and written by Glasgow based composer, William Sweeney. inspired by the harsh clarity oi language and imagery oi Lewis Grasslc Gibbon’s trilogy A Scots 0uair, the twenty minute work is in one movement, with its North-East iniluence particularly appropriate as Jimmy Milne comes irom Aberdeen.
The concert is being sponsored by the STUC with £5000 provided by the Musicians' Union, an imaginative
means oi iurihering the SNO’s associations with the unions and reputedly the iirst time anyone in the trades union movement has been honoured in this way.
Also included is music by MacCunn, Tchaikovsky and Dvorak. Date is Wednesday 19 February at 7.30pm in
the City Hall, Glasgow (see listings).
