Making a rare appearance inthis country, Facets Performance Ensemble from Chicago are stopping off at only two places— Newcastle and Glasgow (Tron Theatre, 7 and 8 Feb. See Listings).
They are not a group to take productions lightly; the two they present in Glasgow - ‘Macondo', telling the history of several generations of a Columbian family and based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's
Nobel Prize winning novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude', and ‘The Book of Lear' — both took them a long way from the rehearsal room.
In 1982, just before Marquez won the Nobel Prize, the company set off for Columbia, where they lived in a series

of villages around Aracataca, Marquez's birth-place, meeting people who knew him, in order to try and understand the atmosphere and culture of Columbia and to find out the meaning behind Macondo, the strange half dream-like place where Marquez's novel is set. The performance, first presented around Columblan villages, is an attempt to recreate on stage what they discovered.
Their approach to the story of King Lear was equally remotely researched — in the desert to be precise. Looking for a contemporary environment equivalent to that of Lear, the company sought out the nomadic tribes of the desert.
