STOCKBBIDGE PAST AND‘ PRESENT

To an outsider Stockbridge may appear similar to a rather quaint, quiet and perhaps even antiquated picture-book hamlet. ‘Stockbridge Past and Present' however, reveals that although its walls may have a nostalgic appeal, the characters within certainly don’t stand still. Community lite is evident through the variety ot photographs -

The cobbled stones which act as a backcloth tor a tew oi the exhibits are an integral part at lite in Stockbridge, both past and present, and are perhaps one oi the reasons for the seemingly relaxed and easy pace oi liie. ‘Mother and Son’ appears typical oi the era represented.

This small but in depth look at

sepia leeling oi going back in time, but rather a leeling that beneath the monochrome stills on view lies a rather unique representation ot a community lull oi vitality, triendshlp and leeling - in itself a good enough reason to go and see this exhibition, it may even kindle the spark perhaps as yet unlit in many at this time of year. 19th century, while Messrs Pryke & Palmer, Hardware Merchants, obviously took a strong moral line over bath-time. ‘The Invincible’ and ‘The Lightning‘ were among their bath range which offered the happy combination of‘Durability with Absolute Safety‘ and, to really pre-empt one’s fun, the ‘Sponge Bath with bead inside to prevent splashing'.

0 GRAEME MURRAY GALLERY 15 Scotland Street, 556 6020. Tue—Fri 1—6pm. Sat 10am—2pm.

Closed over the Christmas and New Year period. The creation of the Finlay atmosphere is complete with haunting flute music and anthems, whitened walls, stones laid bare to inscription and a touch of humour and nature infiltrating the installation. Reterences to the French Revolution sit comfortably with the emblems of Finlay‘s own war with Strathclyde Region. War is seen as the companion of nature. Apollo carries a machine gun, a little ceramic watering can is inscribed with Saint-Just’s (guillotined as a revolutionary) dates of birth and death and the flags of Utopia, Arcadia and Little Sparta fly over the mantelpiece.
