adulterous afiairset in Dublin. Ironically, the anticipated struggle with traditional Catholic morality remains only in the background, lingering physically in the form of candles and statues that surround
Peter Ling's meticulous and beautifully
effective bedsit set. The moral focus
here is contained more within the
relationship itself, as the gradual
surrender of sell by one person is
abused by the other
The gradual revelation of character
as the situation grows more involved
, keeps the play moving, and Ann Scott
Jones as Joan brings a passion and grit
to her performance that pulls the
production (directed by Michael Boyd)
up short in places, while Sean
McCarthy as Don peels layer after layer
off a character who constantly . promises to have a centre. But the f self-conscious intensity of intimacy
and the determined naturalism of both play and production conspire somehow to achieve the opposite of intimacy and naturalism and it does tall foul of cliches. (Sarah Hemming)
