The guitar has been prominent in quite a law oi Plattorm’s recent concerts, handled with taste, yet within the style at what’s expected of a jazz instrument. Terie Rypdal with Audun Kleive; drums and percussion, and Bjorn Kiellemyr; acoustic and electric bass, will be pushing back the parameters at the Queens Hall. Edinburgh on 29 Nov. Their Latest album on E.C.M. shows oil Rypdal’s remarkable and original technique on the electric guitar using stereo pickups, octave dividers, compressors, llangers, sustain, wah/wah and guitar synth through pedals to beautilul eltect. In this case, the medium is not the message, all the sound modiliers being used with consideration and switched quickly within alight musical structure. He tends to be sparing rather than showering notes and last runs and sometimes uses a violin bow on the strings. The title track Chaser is a lusion piece that emerges trom a road

classical composer, and having played piano until his teens, he then took up the guitar and spent the sixties being pursued by young girls while in Norway's number one pop group. He

writer tor symphony orchestra, choir, woodwind and string quartets — more and more in terms of improvised in coniunction with written material. The two other members at the band were both students at Oslo Music Academy beiore pursuing their careers in theatre, rock and jazz. Make your way to Clerk Street on St. Andrews night. Not tor Buddy Tate the cool style, the only things in motion the lingers and the mind. His music is lor moving. it’s been keeping him on his leetlor most of the twentieth century.
Born in Texas, 1914, Buddy, with his tenor sax and clarinet, have been trading with all the names from the era ol the bigger bands, notably Benny Goodman and Count Basie, with whom he solo’d through the 40's. From the 50’s to the 70’s he lronted his own band at the Celebrity Club in New York but took time to visit Europe regularly in different line-ups. On this trip he shares the platlorm in Glasgow on 3 Dec and Edinburgh on 6 Dec with the trombonist and lriend Al Grey.
Buddy stopped drinking and smoking in the 1930’s and remembers being surprised in conversation with Clyde Barrow, yes- Buddy’s other halt—to learn that the Ford driver look good care at himself and laid oil the booze. Bank robbers may not have much at a lite expectancy, but Buddy is still up there, getting high playing his horn. (Norman Chalmers)
