Part otthe Nativity in Art exhibition at the National Gallery, this drawing was a study tor a stained glass panel. The bold lines around the King’s robes indicate the places ior the lead outlines. Like the other exhibits, it may serve as a starting point ior an idea ior the competition, ‘Christmas, a Story ior our Time‘. The National Gallery is inviting entries in the form oi a picture, words and picture, or just words from anyone up to 18 years. Prizes will be in 3 age groups. Closing date 18 Dec. Entries oi worir will be hung in the gallery 20 Decé Jan. Contemporary costumes, locations, modern wise men or participants are encouraged, using the same ireedom as have the artists exhibited.

The Ballet Rambert’s special children’s matinee programme, ‘Ditierent Steps' is another oi the uniortunate casualties ot the teachers’ action. There are however a number oi perlormances during the current active dance events which, although not specifically designed tor children, may in tact spark an enthusiasm and reward the experiment ot taking them along with an adult instead ol getting a baby sitter in.

Stage 7 Sat 16 Nov. 8pm. Prices as above. A more sophisticated piece from the same company as above, using 7 white-clad dancers spot-lit by a moveable floodlight against a darkened set. More appropriate for older children, but again its brevity, approx 45 mins. does not make it a prohibitively risky experiment!
The Silent Circle Sun 17 Nov, 8pm. 6.30—7pm. Ticket holders can observe the company making up and getting into costume. Centre Ocean Stream Theatre Company are an innovative company who use colour and light to explore emotions. The visual effect is more stunning and dramatic than the content. which is abstract. in Search at King Arthur Wed 27 Nov—23 Feb 86. The legend of King Arthur. Merlin and Sir Lancelot is brought to life for Christmas for children. Posing the questions ‘Who was Arthur?‘ and ‘Did Camelot exist?‘ it weaves together fact with well-loved myth, and includes Excalibur. Arthur’s famous sword embedded in stone, irresistibly inviting would-be Arthurs to test their magical strength.
Mary Queen of Scots a semi-permanent exhibition designed primarily for children, it therefore sets out to include and involve them in the period, from playing musical instruments to dressing up as some of the most colourful characters from Mary’s dramatic life and times, including John Knox, James VI or his court jester.
Far Round the World Until 17 Nov. An extensive collection of costume dolls from all over the world. Children are invited to take part themselves by dressing up in costumes provided.
