Dr Winifred Rushforth. Until Wed 11 Dec. Founder of the Davidson Clinic in Edinburgh. Dr Rushforth used a variety of therapies to arrive at an individual approach to analysis. Dream therapy was central to her theories and she was a firm believer in the creative potentiai of the unconscious in everyone. This exhibition commemorates Dr Rushforth's life and work in her home city.

Joseph Farquharson Laird of Finzean (1846—1935) drew inspiration from the beautiful wooded estate in Aberdeenshire that was his home. Though most of his time was spent in Scotland. he did travel to France during the 1880s on several occasions. where he became familiar with the Paris Art scene. He took the fashion of plein-air painting back to Scotland. but the weather demanded a more hardy and ingenious approach to the technique. So he equipped himselfwith a studio-on-wheels complete with stove which could be taken to any

Who is this man? Recognise him from his numerous newspaper appearances? No? To discover his identity you need only take a trip to the National Gallery of Scotland on the Mound.
He is in fact part of the group in the Mantegna painting everyone has heard so much about. How we all have the opportunity of seeing it for a month. Bought in April for a record-shattering 28.2 million by the J.Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, the Adoration of the Magi goes West unless funds can be found to lteep it here.
Largely due to the eitorts of Timothy Clifford, the gallery’s new director, recently joined in his search by a band oi powerful men dubbed ‘Patrons of the National Galleries of Scotland’, £4 million has already been raised. A mighty sum over such a short period during such hard times. Mr Clifford's fund-raising ability cannot be faulted.

But what about the picture? From relative obscurity this must surely be the most written about palntlng oi the year and has certainly earned Scotland's National Gallery wide coverage in the press.
The picture ltseli ls smallerthan photographs of it would lead you to believe and darker. All eyes are on the infant Christ, the central figure of the composition, as he raises his hand in blessing. It is a profound occasion.
But is this the ‘splrltual uplift' Mr. Clifiord promises on seeing this Renaissance religious work, a strong enough force to mark it as one of the great buys of the century? And will its legendary price bring the crowds into the galleries in years to come? Will this ‘supreme Image of hollness' remain a celebrity when the £81 million no longer stands as a record-breaker? i wonder. (Alice Baln).
